Emilia-Romagna, Italy

About

Founded in 1966 by Vincenzo Geminiani and now led by his granddaughter Cristina Geminiani, Fattoria Zerbina stands at the forefront of Emilia-Romagna’s modern wine renaissance. Rooted in the hills of Marzeno, the estate has become a reference point for expressive, terroir-driven wines made from native grapes, particularly Sangiovese and Albana, crafted with both precision and daring intent.

Cristina’s pioneering work with high-density alberello training and her commitment to site-specific expression shine across the range. From the vibrant fruit and clarity of Ceregio Rosso and Bianco di Ceparano, to the structure and poise of Torre di Ceparano and Marzieno, and the distinct voice of Poggio Vicchio, each wine reflects a singular place and an unwavering belief: “To achieve quality, shortcuts don’t count. All the more when it comes to wine.”

2024 ‘Ceregio Bianco’ Romagna Trebbiano DOC

2023 ‘Ceregio Rosso’ Romagna Sangiovese Superiore DOC

This Sangiovese represents the first step in the hierarchy of red wines of Fattoria Zerbina; despite that it has won numerous critical awards. Produced from a faster and lighter vinification than the best selections, Ceregio is conceived as a ready to drink wine, even if in some vintages it can keep and improve for 5-6 years.

Colour: Intense ruby red
Nose: Red fruits hold sway, notably cherry, violet and pomegranate.
Taste: Corresponds neatly with the aromas, juicy and vinous, tannins of solid density.

Alcohol content: 13% vol
Serving temperature: 16 °C
Grapes: Sangiovese
Vinification: In steel tanks of medium capacity with vinification of 10-12 days
Aging: In steel and cement tanks of middle capacity

2024 ‘Bianco de Ceperano’ Romagna Albana Secco DOCG

Albana is certainly the most compelling grape variety in our production, because it is exclusive to the region and, thanks to our Scaccomatto, it has returned to the center of attention. After successful experiences with passito wines, we decided to dedicate ourselves to the production of a dry white wine. We planted a vineyard with a higher density of vines and careful control of the foliage to lend freshness and aroma to the grapes. The result is an original white wine, stylistically oriented toward whites of the Loire, endowed with fresh floral scents, but above all extraordinary and exuberant acidity which distinguishes it at its best even after 7-8 years.

Colour: Pale gold with greenish reflections
Nose: Floral notes of acacia with hints of tropical fruits, citric notes, especially grapefruit
Taste: Good structure, dynamic, with excellent acidity, savory with hints of iodine

Alcohol content: 12% vol
Serving temperature: 9-10 °C
Grapes: Albana
Vinification: In steel tanks of medium capacity with fermentation of 18 - 20 days
Aging: In cement tanks in contact with fine lees for about 5 months

2023 ‘Poggio Vicchio’ Romagna Marzeno DOC

First produced from the 2019 vintage in plot 38, a historical vineyard of the PodereVicchio, which more than any other has highlighted over the years the notes of marasca cherry and violet, typical of Sangiovese from the red clays of Marzeno. This wine in a simple way represents all the beauty and fragrance of Sangiovese.

Colour: Lively ruby
Nose: Intensely fruity, highlighted by notes of morello cherry and red cherry, typical of the red clay of Marzeno, with a subtle mineral touch at the finish
Taste: Refreshingly dynamic, endowed with slender tannins well supported by a pleasant acidity. Fruity notes correspond perfectly with the nose

Alcohol content: 13% vol
Serving temperature: 16°C
Grapes: 100% Sangiovese
Vinification: In steel tanks of medium capacity with maceration on the skins for about 10-12 days
Aging: In steel tanks for about 6 months

2019 ‘Torre di Ceperano’ Romagna Sangiovese Superiore Riserva DOC

Conceived as a “second wine,” starting from 2008 this has become the Riserva par excellence of the Romagna Sangiovese Superiore appellation, thanks to the increasing quality of the alberello vines. It may be considered a wine for important occasions, though its pleasant drinkability makes it ideal for sipping at any time by less expert palates. In some vintages, to exalt its fruity character without losing touch with Sangiovese, small percentages of Merlot may be added, never more than 5-6%.

Select harvesting and care in vinification and aging are the same as for the top wines and the results prove it.

Colour: Robust ruby red
Nose: Notes small red fruits and berries, violets and underbrush, earthy and spicy
Taste: Excellent structure, silky tannins and captivating flavors

Alcohol content: 14% vol
Serving temperature: 18 °C
Grapes: Sangiovese (minimum 90%), Merlot (5-8%) and Ancellotta (maximum 2%)
Vinification: In steel tanks of medium capacity with fermentation of 15-21 days
Aging: In 500-liter tonneau and French oak barriques of second and third passage plus a small percentage of American and Hungarian oak

2019 ‘Marzieno’ Ravenna Rosso IGT

Produced in the wake of the Tuscan experience of the mid 1980s, in which Sangiovese was often blended with noble foreign varieties, Marzieno over the years has built its own personality and, above all, its own credibility. So much so, that it is considered by critics to be among the few red wines of our region able to compete with the best Italian wines of its type. Starting from the 2001 vintage, while keeping a solid framework of Sangiovese, Marzieno has been blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot. Our favorite vintages are 1990, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2006, 2008, 2011 and 2016.

Colour: Deep ruby red
Nose: Combines dark fruit and berries with a whiff of cherries marinated in alcohol and spices, tobacco, chocolate
Taste: Rich and savory with rounded, velvety tannins, powerful on the palate but balanced by freshness

Alcohol content: 14,5% vol
Serving temperature: 18 °C
Grapes: Sangiovese (60-80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10-20%), Merlot and Syrah (20-40%)
Vinification: Partly in 500-liter French oak tonneaux for two weeks with manual pumping over and remontage, partly in medium capacity steel tanks with 15-21 days maceration
Aging: In French oak barriques (20% new) and partly in American and Hungarian oak barriques (10%) for twelve months
