About
"Prior to winegrowing, we were both marine scientists, specialising in phycology (the study of marine plants). In our PhD studies (at different universities), we studied the biodiversity of different seaweed groups and how they are related. It was super fun and the discovery and naming of new species a big highlight, as well as the top notch collaborators we each worked with. A love of wine, food and growing things eventually drew us away from academic life. The Gentle Folk story began in 2012 after spending a lot of our free time in Basket Range helping and hanging out with James Erskine (Jauma), Alex Schulkin (The Other Right) and other early pioneers of the Basket Range wine movement. Our winemaking journey started with just three barrels of wine in 2013 from the Broderick's Basket Range Vineyard, and a dream. Over the years we have been lucky enough to travel parts of the world learning about winemaking and growing, have acquired a lot more vineyard area as well as built relationships with some amazing growers in the Adelaide Hills. We currently produce between six and seven thousand cases annually, employ five lovely humans and farm eight hectares of vines. A kid (Leonard) appeared somewhere in the middle! 2024 ' Village' Release
2024 Village Riesling
Our love for off-dry Riesling has meant giving the style a third run but with some refinement. Dryer than previous years, bottled much earlier but still with a little hint of sugar to balance out the acidity we get from the high altitude and quartz soils of Scary Gully. We love riesling, simple. Enjoy.

2024 Village Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon blanc has a special history in the Adelaide Hills region and we are proud to be part of that, albeit in a slightly different style. Some serious wines can be made from the right vineyars so never underestimate the variety! Barrel fermented with full malolactic fermentation, a wine of poise and tension and purity.

2024 Village Chardonnay
Often seen as the pinnacle of white grapes, the Hills is a very good spot to grow and make Chardonnay, thats for sure. The 2024 blend benefits this year from addition of our new estate vineyard in Basket Range. Its beautifully refined and complex Adelaide Hills Chardonnay that balanced acidity, new oak and powerful fruit just right.

2024 Village Pinot Noir
Estate fruit plus the St Jame's vineyard. This release is moer about the earthiness and bramble relective of the majority of the fruit coming from Little Creek and Basket Range, but it still sits comforably in our usual house style - a dance of aromatics and tannin. Sadly tiny yields so not much available...

Vinification: Mostly 20% whole cluster open-top fermentation for three weeks, but the blend includes some shorter macerated 100% whole bunch ferments. Eight months in French oak barriques and puncheons, 15% new.

2024 Village Sangiovese
We love Sangiovese above all other grape varieties. There... we said it. It's just magic up here, puckering acidity, dusty taninns and flavour for days. It's Adelaide Hills sure, but it's a clear comparison to the old world. As good as lunch wine gets we reckon, and who doesn't love a wine at lunch!

Soils: Sandy loam over siltstone and sandstone.
Vinification: 100% destemmed and open- top fermented for three weeks before closing tank and leaving on skins for an extra three weeks before being pressed and spending nine months in terracotta, hogsheads & foudre.

2024 Village Syrah
We are lucky to purchase Syrah from two of the best Hills sites, multiple clones, heaps of sun plus some thoughtful planting density and vine age. These vines are grown by great freinds, the Turnbulls and the Downers, with a passion for their land and the wine it can produce. 2024 has density, spice, tannin and all the things you want from a proper syrah.

2023 Piccadilly Chardonnay
Old vine Chardonnay from the heart of Piccadilly, where the wines are renowned for their power and flair. No doubt about it with this wine, it’s all lemon citrus, melons, ripe fruit and impressive acid…a complete package and the reason this part of the Hills is often referred to as the “Grand Cru” section.

2023 Ashton Chardonnay
The sixth release from our 0.8 ha block in Ashton where the northerly aspect and deep clay soils result in a wine with boldness and texture. It’s not just about the bold flavours though, there is a beautiful stone fruit character and a great acid line from a very cool growing season.

2023 Scary Gully Chardonnay
Scary Gully has a fine boned line from the shallow rocky soils its grown on high up in Forest Range. The wine is all about the minerality and the hints of lime, fennel seeds and white peach. Its driven, it’s distinct, it’s one of the great sites in the Adelaide Hills, further enhanced by low yields and the coolness of the vintage.

2023 Monomeith Pinot Noir
One of the great and distinctive vineyards of the Adelaide Hills, and arguably the coolest. Monomeith sits in its own very cool valley on the top ridge of Ashton and the vines benefit from an east-west orientation, where part of the vineyard gets the morning sun and the other half the afternoon sun. This results in a wine with great depth, complexity and all the classic aromatics of great Pinot noir.

2023 Scary Gully Pinot Noir
The Pinot noir at Scary Gully is one of the highest and oldest in the Adelaide Hills and sits upon a ridge of sandstone and quartz. The 2023 vintage ended up being the cooolest and latest vintage on record so we had some serious farming challenges on the steep slopes in the wet!
However, the low yielding, cool and slow ripening season has resulted in wines that have a depth and tension we rarely achieved in the Hills, especially from 2023, so this is a true testament to the site.

2023 Little Creek Pinot Noir
Little Creek may not be the steepest of our sites, but the design of the site makes it almost impossible to drive on in the wet. Sadly the 2023 vintage, which was extremely wet and cold, meant that disease pressure was high in the region, and sadly Little Creek bore the most damage from mildew. Only two barrels of wine were made but what barrels they were! Its powerful, its aromatic, and its an absolute pleasure to drink and toast to a challenging year from a special site.

2023 Onkaparinga Valley Sangiovese
A new wine in the portfolio for 2023. Meticulously farmed twenty-six year old vines from the boniest and highest section of the Turnbull Vineyard in Charleston have allowed us to realize our dream of making site specific Sangiovese. It’s still young and primary but with the natural acidity and the fine boned tannins we are sure that this wine, as well as this story, have only just started their journeys.
